Poem #14 -- Lost and Found

LOST AND FOUND

I look behind the sofa,
I gape under the car,
I gaze out in the garden,
But my poem isn't there.

I open all the junkmail,
I snoop behind the door,
I check last Sunday's paper,
There's no poem anywhere.

I scan inside the cupboards,
I peer atop the fridge,
I peek into my closet,
But my poem's out of sight.

I glance down at my paper,
I read between the lines,
Find the moral of the story:
Set pencil free and it will write!

I love the idea that our poems show up where we least expect it. I haven't been good at going back and revising poems that I do in these sorts of online exercises but I did one yesterday for the Write After Reading thing that Laura Salas and I are doing. It was about sound diagrams (I'd never heard of them.) Anyway, your poem today made me think that if I go back and look at more of my old poems that I will find even MORE poems waiting for me between the lines.

  2. Oh yes! I know this feeling! Set the pencil free. It's always so neat to think about what's in there...waiting... Again - this is a must-share with your students. They DO know you're doing this, right? A.
