PO-EMotion -- Fear

FEAR

A shadow passes over my voice
like a hawk circling a field mouse,
like a heron targeting a bullfrog.

I freeze.

I didn't even raise my hand!
Why did she call on me?

  1. She said she fell
    in her dream last night,
    a tipping point of
    invisible gravity,
and she woke with a start
to realize her feet were still
    glued to the ground.

  2. I think it does feel like being hunted for some kids. Love this and the photo to go along.

  3. I love the juxtaposition of being hunted and being called on in class.

I think I had way too much fun with today's poem. Shouldn't fear be scary?

  4. For some who want to hide, you've described the feeling well, Mary Lee. I wish it weren't true.

    Sometimes Fear Motivates

    Mama waited, James frozen
at the edge of the pool,
    wanting to please.
    Fearful of both the water
    and her frown,
    he jumped.
    Mama smiled.

  5. I messed around all day yesterday (when I should have been cleaning or doing my taxes). I have three different fear poems. Interesting, the first one that came was a school poem.

    "fear"

    every year
    a little one hangs back
    whimper crying
    clinging to mama's hand
and I gently peel the two apart
reassure mom (who is also a little teary)

    here there will be
    books
    watercolors
    good friends
    and recess

    school
is not such a scary place
    after all

    "Fear"

    that voice
    called fear
    whisper shouts
    in my ear

    but what if…
    and what if…
    or what if…
    even so, what if…

    and I have to keep
    reminding that
    loud loud loud
    quiet voice,

    "Peace!
    Be still
    and know that
    HE is God."

    ****************
And then a tanka (Japanese poem, five lines, syllables: 5-7-5-7-7)

    "To my boys"

    Often fear looks like
    anger loud red hot breaking
    easier to rage
    than to acknowledge weakness
or holes grief has torn in soul

  6. OK, so it just occurred to me I was so busy trying to get stuff posted and make it to my oil change by 8:00 that I didn't even comment on your poem. Once again, I'm amazed by how much you get done in only a few lines. I know so many kids that feel like this! And two similes, and double ll besides. This would be a great beginning of the school getting to know you, how much is this like you poem.

  7. HAH! Poor kiddo -- sometimes, it just takes nothing but being in the same room with Scary Teacher...
