Childhood Dreams

Childhood Dreams

Dream, child, dream.
Your bed is a boat
on the wide sea
of possibility.

Close your eyes.
Fling your arms wide.
Dance in the light
on the stage.

You’re a movie star today,
tomorrow a dancer,
maybe a teacher.
Dream, child, dream.

“My mother, Malvina Reynolds, once told me that when she was young, she would lie in bed and imagine that she was onstage, dancing, with a spotlight following her. She wanted to be a movie star, but she assumed that that would never happen, so she decided she’d be a teacher instead and work a smaller stage.”

  1. I've often thought that teaching is like acting.

  2. Oh oh oh, a dreamer poem! I love this, Mary Lee! It speaks also to a child's imagination... and I love Ruth's connection between teaching and acting. It is certainly being on stage, all eyes on you... xo

  3. I've always felt like I was putting on a show at school. I"m an introvert, but can handle being in front of my kids because of this, as weird as it sounds.

  4. I like that "wide sea of possibility", and the quote is good to read about Malvina, too. Interesting about the teaching, an apt connection.

  5. It's so important to have a dream, and I love the idea of a "wide sea of possibility." Very nice!

  6. Love this line, "Your bed is a boat
    on the wide sea
    of possibility."

One of my students made a poster for our classroom that reads "I'm Possible" Your poem reminds me of this. We can be anything we dream.
