Poetry Friday: Thug

As seen/passed around on FaceBook

THUG

All summer it's been cool
but just in time for school
the heat comes back,
like a big muggy bully.

One afternoon, regardless of the math lesson,
the air conditioning goes out.
Just up and leaves.
Walks out of the room without permission,

leaving the door open
for the bully to swagger in,
disrupt the lesson,
and make us sweat ourselves.

  1. Unfortunately I can make a self to text connection on this poem. Agree 110% and I am pretty sure it was the entire district...

  2. Oh, this has happened far too often in my school so I can relate... Ohio weather is crazy. School starts and all of a sudden we get some great pool days. Go figure!

  3. Right there with you in Colorado! Except my school doesn't have air conditioning at all!

  4. Oh no! Heat is not conducive to study, is it. Hope that bully stops coming 'round. xo

  5. Hi, Mary Lee. When I read your attitude-filled poem, all I could think of was my new favorite vlog: Thug Notes. Check out the link. I promise, you will enjoy. http://www.thug-notes.com/

  6. I don't love that 'muggy bully' either, Mary Lee. We have air, but taking the kids outside which most of the teachers do has been a challenge. It's going to be 97 today! Hello summer of mid-July!

  7. I remember those hot muggy school days! We had to use box fans. (Fingers crossed for AC soon!)

  12. Down with the muggy thug! I live in FLorida where the whole summer is Satan's weather, but the winter's are amazing. I like the attitude in your poem!

  13. Maria's right on--a text-to-self connection for sure! Hope the muggy weather goes away soon. Fun poem!

  14. Thanks for this terrific poem. Can definitely relate here in Illinois right now. So grateful for a/c today!
Hope you're able to keep the "muggy bully" at bay.

  15. Down here in Louisiana as in Florida, that's just how it is...always. If we get a low humidity day, we shout "Fall is coming!"

  16. Ugh. That doesn't sound very nice at all. I hope you told that muggy bully to swagger himself right into a time out. Fun poem, though.

There's nothing worse than being in a stifling hot classroom! Love that you turned it into a poem & hope it cools down soon.

  18. Funny how there's never a happy medium! At work today the A/C was cranked up so high my hands were stiff with cold!

  19. Like the first commenter, I can also make a self to text connection! Glad the AC in my classroom is working again. Nothing worse than a room full of sweaty, sleepy seventh graders after lunch!

  20. I love that first stanza, Mary Lee. Such swagger. Love the long-held "oooool" end rhymes that remind me of Gwendolyn Brooks' (but so very different meaning) followed by the short, brutal "back" that stops the third line so abruptly the bully swaggers into the poem through the the open space it left behind. Wonderful!

  21. So perfect for this awful, muggy, humid weather we are having in SC. I am really looking forward to fall! I also really like your image of weather as a bully--it is wonderful!

  22. Hi Mary Lee!

I got distracted by Laura's Thug Notes and watched a few of those. I hope your weather is better this week! It's hard to concentrate with a bully around.
