Mrs. Baker from The Wednesday Wars definitely deserves a place on our list of 100+ Cool Teachers in Children's Literature. What a great teacher--someone who helps students find out who it is that they are. I LOVED her! She may be one of my favorite teachers of all time.
And I LOVED the book--definitely deserving of the Newbery Honor that it received last week.
With all of the new books that have come out recently, let us know if you know of any more recent teacher characters that belong on our list!
This was one of my favorite books I read last year -- I would have been extremely disappointed if it hadn't gotten at least the Newbery Honor. I hope to get some of my teachers to use it as a read aloud. And you're right -- Mrs. Baker certainly belongs on the list of 100+ Cool Teachers.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little surprised that Miss Dove from Good Morning, Miss Dove by Frances Gray Patton isn't on the list. Such a wonderful classic example of a great teacher :)
ReplyDeleteBecky, thanks for nominating Miss Dove! We'll get her on the list right away.
ReplyDeleteI'm also going to add Mr. P from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Maybe he doesn't have the best track record as a Cool Teacher, but he does give Arnold Spirit the hope he needs to leave the rez.
