Great 2008 Read Alouds

I wrote an article for Choice Literacy that was posted there today. 10 of my favorite 2008 novels for reading aloud to middle grade/middle school.  In case you are interested.

  1. Okay, I think I like YOUR list the best... I'm just sayin'. In my opinion THIS is the list to use for middle grade reading. But again, just my opinion. I would say some of these books got ROBBED in the Cybils this year. Again... IMO.

  3. Great list. My son had a fourth grade teacher who was always sharing a book out loud with them, and he would come home and rave to me about whatever it was. I came in to his class and read a little of Bud, Not Buddy to them, too, and it was wonderful. They had learned to be terrific, polite, enthusiastic listeners. The benefits of reading aloud to the middle grades can't be overstated, I think.

  4. I was wondering where third grade falls when you consider middle readers...are any of these titles great for third grade? The list is great, third grade is just on the bubble.

  5. I love your list. we are reading Knucklehead for February Guys Read. Is Shooting the Moon okay for third? Nice picture of you reading. It is fun to put a face to a blog.

Carol said you will be in Denver this summer. we should do a blog coffe.

  6. Mandy and Kyle, I am never sure about 3rd grade either. I think it depends on your group. Highway Cats would be a good one for 3rd, I think. I think the Henkes book would be good too. Shooting the Moon is good but it probably depends on the group for third. They change so much by the spring and I've had third grade groups that are more sophisticated in their thinking than others. I think 3rd grade is the trickiest in terms of read alouds.

Kyle--a blog coffee sounds really fun! Good idea!

  7. Thanks Franki, I'm currently reading Highway Cats and starting it this week as a read aloud. I wanted to make them away of the Newberry annoucement later this month. I'm also glad to read you find third to be a bit tricky.
