FALL
by Edward Hirsch
Fall, falling, fallen. That's the way the season
Changes its tense in the long-haired maples
That dot the road; the veiny hand-shaped leaves
Redden on their branches (in a fiery competition
With the final remaining cardinals) and then
Begin to sidle and float through the air, at last
Settling into colorful layers carpeting the ground.
(the rest of the poem is at poets.org)
The round up this week is at Biblio File.
I love this line: "the split second between summer's
ReplyDeletesprawling past and winter's hard revision"
Fall's at its peak here---gorgeous color, just enough wind to blow a few leaves around, some sunshine, but a chill in the air at night. If only this "split second" would last longer...
I love the mood and pace of this poem. Fall didn't slide away in Colorado this year. I shoveled more than a foot of snow off my sidewalk and driveway last night. Beautiful but way early!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect description of the season. The dreamy, reflective mood really drew me in. Love the "perfect moment" too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great distillation of this time of year! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely poem about this great season! Love the picture you chose to go along with it, too!
