In the Early Morning Dark, In the Fall

In the Early Morning Dark, In the Fall

I step out onto the front porch
thinking it must still be raining,
but the steady patter I hear
is the oak being deconstructed
by a light breeze.

  1. I think I might create a list of all the wonderful poems about leaves, and now you've added another, Mary Lee. It has that undercurrent of sadness I feel in the autumn, although I love the season too.

It's hard not to think of poems as leaves swirl around us like words. Thanks for sharing, Mary Lee!

  7. Love this, Mary Lee. Among the many things a change of seasons brings is another set of sounds, odd to our summer ears: the leaves' decent through the tree, the sudden silence of crickets, a quick wind through bare branches. Your poem helped me hear these. Many thanks!

  10. I didn't expect the word deconstruct. You have me thinking about how just one word can create images and cause thinking. Thank you.

  13. You are a word smith. Every time I stop by I am reminded of this very fact. I could read this again and again.

Oh my, the image of the oak being deconstructed by a light breeze just struck me. I suppose its the contrast of the image of deconstruction and light breeze that just made me stop and take it in.
