Astronomical Passions

Invite others to wonder with you.  ~Austin Kleon

Astronomical Passions

Black holes! Galaxies! Space! The Universe will invite
you to be awed and amazed. Find others
with the same astronomical passions to
marvel at, to wonder
about, and to investigate with
you.

  1. Wow! As always, when you write poetry, there's so much big truth in just such a few lines. As I read this poem, I think about the importance of passion and wonder and awe. I love the sentence, "The universe will invite you to be awed and amazed. And then you talk about the importance of community and having fellow travelers on the journey. Wow, wow, wow! Some big life lessons here, my friend!

I want to know more about the kids' quotes. Where did they come from? How did they choose them?

  2. And now I'm wondering--are Brian and Austin the originators of the quotes, or the kids who chose them? Love the limitless activity of this poem!

  3. I guess at some point I'll have to write a process post! Inquiring Poet Minds always want to know the back story. :-)

How the quotes were chosen: In my classroom, I have a couple of books of quotes and a whole stack of GapingVoid (Hugh MacLeod) quote/cartoons that I printed and laminated. Kids browsed those to find their quotes, or they made them up, or chose them from a favorite movie (Yoda/Star Wars will appear later in the month!)

    1. Found my answer. I knew I would. This one is such a gem, Mary Lee. You are a terrific poet and teacher. I am so impressed yet not. I can't wait for a book of your poetry to be in the world. Janet Clare F.

  5. The first Austin Kleon book I read, Steal Like an Artist, had me wishing it weren't a library book so I could highlight the daylights out of it! Love what you did with this one, Mary Lee!

  9. You expand each one of these gems into a mountain of gems. I am hoping that each child will receive a copy of this book at year's end. Inspiring in so many ways. xxxx
