The Choice is Yours
There will always be fences
there will always be walls
keeping out, keeping in
dividing
hiding.
And there will always be beauty
there will always be art
reaching out, seeking within
exciting
inviting.
(draft)

The photos tell the story of our neighbor's fence built the wrong way out, and my artistic response. Those are polished rocks, slices of rock, geodes, and fossils that our rockhound friends gave me. Murals might be next, who knows?
Tricia has the Poetry Friday roundup today at a blog named after a book that would pair nicely with my post -- The Miss Rumphius Effect.
I love how you always seem to make choices that are joyful and inspiring and creative and hopeful. And I don't think this poem is a draft! I LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteI love this, Mary Lee!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the fence and the story.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance, I thought the rocks were slugs (you can tell I'm a girl from the NW).
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way to showcase the gifts from friends. Love these words from your poem:
"And there will always be beauty
there will always be art..."
Cool! Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful response to a wall! I hope you're also good neighbors.
ReplyDeleteThis is a brilliant poem and a brilliant story. Bring on the beauty and art!
ReplyDeleteYour creativity makes me wish I had a fence to decorate! I love the hopefulness in your poem: "And there will always be beauty/there will always be art."
ReplyDeleteI saw these on FB, Mary Lee, love your idea & that you've written a poem about them, too. Our store manager does found art pieces & places them on fences in alleys throughout the inner city. He 'art bombs'! A mural would be grand!
ReplyDeleteI love your turn from fences that block to ones that invite!
ReplyDeleteYou caught me in a tender moment -- so many tender moments in this crazy world right now -- so I burst into tears when I read this. Thank you for that...
ReplyDeleteThe power of choice--your poem beautifully reminds me that we have choices. Now I'm envisioning art transforming all kinds of walls, inviting people to come together instead of keeping them apart.
ReplyDeleteYou've brought beauty to that fence and to your poem. Both are lovely, Mary Lee.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely response! You've created beauty instead of cultivating resentment and shared the power of a positive lens. Love this!!
ReplyDeleteI loved when I saw your photos on FB Mary Lee, and now I love it even more with your accompanying poem! Goodonya for turning lemons into lemonade. :D
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michelle, Mary Lee. I read this yesterday and I guess I did not send the publish button when I wrote my comment. You turned the tables around on this situation and created art on your side of the fence. A positive stance in the face of difficulties is commendable.
ReplyDeleteLove the circular patterns you created with all your jewel rocks, fossils, and geodes–the poems fits so well. Yay for art and for your poem, thanks Mary Lee!
ReplyDeleteThe back side of the fence is always someone's front side. Love this little draft, its form, its essence of hope.
