This will be the year that I'm almost drowning almost all the time. But I've made a couple of promises to myself. I will write a bit (even if a few words) each day. I will maintain my exercise. Earlier this week, I composed this poem in my head as I walked in the early morning darkness. A two-fer!

Heidi has the Poetry Friday roundup this week at my juicy little universe.

  1. And a wonderful "two-fer" it is, Mary Lee. I hope you save that "exclamation scent" as one perfection line. Best wishes for staying above water as best you can.

  2. "Exclamation scent"! Love it. Your promises seem like they will keep your spirit fed, give you enough strength to keep swimming.

  3. Yes to composing while walking–I do much of that too. You may surprise yourself at how much you'll accomplish–but the lack of downtime is difficult, hope you'll fit some in… And I hope squirrel didn't visit close to your home–I do love "exclamation scent," thanks Mary Lee.

  4. Hah - yes, the heavy smell hanging in the air is like an invisible interrobang, isn't it.

Thinking of you, cousin. You can do this!

  5. You hit the right note with your pungent punch line, 'exclamation scent', Mary Lee. I wish you many more two-fers as the school year continues. :)

  7. Ha! You are fun and funny...the poor surprised little skunk. Poor you!

    1. Luckily, I only experienced the aftermath. I didn't actually even see the skunk, but I definitely detected the surprise of the moment!

  8. That exclamation scent is something I remember from childhood. Taking country road Sunday trips always was highlighted with the odorous scent of close by skunks. Love that play on words.

  9. I love your commitment to write and exercise. I'm sending hugs to all my teaching friends. And I keep reminding parents that this is a tough time for everyone, teachers included. I'm hoping to help them extend grace, a much needed quality during this time. And your w-squared (walking & writing) poem is perfect (especially since you only smelled, but didn't get sprayed)!

  10. Write for yourself, Mary Lee. For the joy or the balm of it. (And avoid surprised skunks!)

  11. Keeping up the daily walks will be the biggest challenge, I think. I don't like walking in the dark for exactly this reason! Here's to keeping our heads above water!

  13. I could almost smell that skunk in the humid air! Exercise and creativity-we need both so much and have to pay attention even if we're busy. I hope your work is going well.
