Peony and Ant by Mary Lee Hahn |
Today
by Billy Collins
If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze
that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house
and unlatch the door to the canary's cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,
a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies
seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like...
Ahh...five more days of school...need I say more?
Violet has today's Poetry Friday roundup at Violet Nesdoly / Poems.
Please note that Jone and Buffy have traded weeks at the end of next month. Jone will be hosting on June 20 and Buffy will have June 27.
Just lovely. Looking forward to one of these days!
ReplyDeleteMy peonies are just opening-late this year. We have two more weeks. I love the final week, so much celebration! Hope yours is perfect, Mary Lee.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for sharing this poem! This is the first time I've read it. Thank you.

Thanks for the BC fix! Such an exhilarating poem. Perfect for the weekend and the coming of summer.
ReplyDeleteExhilarating is, indeed, the word! And I knew the last line before I clicked to read the rest of the poem...which normally isn'ta good thing, but in this case it was satisfying!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorites of Billy Collins. I even wrote my own version once. I love the part about releasing the snow globe people. He's a master!
ReplyDeleteToday was my last day of school. I came home and took a 2 hour nap. Now I'm ready.

ReplyDeleteCollins is violent in his support of spring, isn't he? Enjoy your release from the cage, Mary Lee!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the fix, Mary Lee! I think I love this poem more each time I read it.
