LOVE IS A PLACE
by e.e. cummings
love is a place
& through this place of
love move
(with brightness of peace)
all places
yes is a world
& in this world of
yes live
(skilfully curled)
all worlds
If you haven't seen Love by Matt de la Pena (illustrated by Loren Long), grab a copy (and a hanky) as soon as possible. This is an example of true picture book magic -- the words and the pictures are perfectly paired.
Before you watch the trailer, you might want to read Matt's article in TIME, "Why We Shouldn't Shield Children From Darkness."
And then read Kate Di Camillo's response, "Why Children's Books Should Be a Little Sad." (another hanky alert for this one)
Another new picture book you should not miss is Be A King by Carole Boston Weatherford.
For this week's not-to-miss poetry, Jan has the Poetry Friday roundup at Book Seed Studio.

A resounding yes for love.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a LOVE-ly book. Another book to put on my "got to get" list.
ReplyDeleteWill be getting "Love" today, so excited to see it, Mary Lee. It's a beautiful post for today. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAdding LOVE to the world: YOU. I am so glad you gave the link to the TIME article, which I read first. Proud of the book creators for holding the line. This was all new to me, including the e.e. cummings yes & love meditation. Happy weekend, teacher extraordinaire, MLH.
ReplyDeleteA nice lead-in to getting ready for Valentine's Day! <3
ReplyDeleteI'm so ready for this book, I think we all need a picture book hug right about now.
ReplyDeleteI like the e.e. cummings poem. I am in line for the Love picture book. Looking forward to reading it!
ReplyDeleteLove. Love. Love.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting Matt's question and Kate's reply--a perfect read and remedy for today (as is e e cummings' poem.)
ReplyDeleteI've read both articles in Time and my heart filled up. It is precisely the message that I have been saying again and again in all my PD workshops - now I have their words to share as further evidence. Thank you for sharing Love - we still don't have it in our public libraries here in Singapore - and I wait for that time when I can finally read it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, powerful book Mary Lee, and moving trailer about it. Thanks for the articles, e.e. comings poem, and the lovely image of the heart too! xo
ReplyDeletewhat a perfect poem to introduce this book.
ReplyDeleteOh my, my wish list keeps getting longer and longer. Thank you for sharing the book and the essays. I had come across Kate's response and am glad to read Matt's original, too. It's not a recent question, either. I can remember Madeleine L'Engle addressing similar issues about children's ability to deal with difficult topics in her books.
ReplyDeleteSo much great reading here! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWow - and it's brand new. Thanks for the heads up, MaryLee!

ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect pairing of poem and picture book--and we were together when we first experienced the magic of this one. I'm wearing my *Standing on the Side of Love* tee shirt to church today, where we are having a "Be a King" service for all ages. Can't wait to share both books with the Diamond Miners.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read/see this book. Thank you for adding all kinds of love to the world this weekend, Mary Lee - we need it!
ReplyDeleteThis entire post has left me gobsmacked, Mary Lee. Love is love is love. Why is this so complicated for some?
ReplyDeleteI'm adding this to my list. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've had an affection for cummings' poetry since 10th grade, when I had to write an essay about a poem I did not understand. :-) I'm looking forward to my copy of LOVE.
