Poetry Friday -- Zentangle Poetry

Three tries, three very different poems.

life was art
no order
perplexing harmonies

I was left feeling dizzy

the thing was
I had imagined something
not
as
unpredictable
and bumpy

the poetry is timeless
who questions this?
no one

How much is "enough time?"

We hope for enough time, knowing there is never enough time.
Except, maybe, in poems -- in writing them and reading them,
far inside them where we lose account of minutes.
Except, maybe, in photographs,
where time sleeps but doesn't close its eyes.

Back in 2012, I subscribed for a year to the Poetry Foundation's poetry journal. I never read more than a poem or two here or there, but I also couldn't find it in me to send them to recycling. Now I've found the perfect use for them. I'm using Poetry to make poetry and art!

Thank you, Poetry Sisters, for this week's challenge. It was fun!

And thanks to all who signed up to host Poetry Friday July-December. The schedule is filled!

Linda has today's Poetry Friday Roundup at A Word Edgewise. It's her annual "clunker" exchange!

  1. I like reading about your background pages from the poetry journal, Mary Lee. What a great way to create poems from poems. I love the way you crafted each one, all connected with time taken to be surprised at this 'new' way to write. I did one, too, so.much.fun!

  2. Mary Lee, I am impressed with your abundance of thought here. I found your 3rd zentangle filled with very interesting lines: "enough time,/knowing there is never enough time," and "far inside them where we lose account of minutes." There is so much truth in this poem. Poem #1 has a wonderful design-very artistic.

  3. I love your Zentangle designs! So lovely. The second one is my favorite. Somehow taking an entire page and distilling it to the essential truth by few words and dynamic design. :)

  4. 3rd times a charm? Two comments I've started have disappeared. Let's see how close they are to each other if they all show up! I know I started out with How cool! I have some recycled book pages...I want to try this. The 3rd zentangle is my favorite...I love working a question into a poem. Fun!

Yes, that was my ENTIRE moment with the Zentangles!!! I somehow thought mine would be much more... something. Oh, well. And what a GREAT use for your poetry magazines!!

  6. Mary Lee, nice post. I love the three zentangle poems. I am being inspired and will look forward to trying this soon. Good idea to use the poems in your inbox for creating more art and writing. Lovely designs on your poem. I bet it was rewarding (zen-like) to draw those lines.

  7. I love the idea of dwelling inside the timelessness of poetry...and may I say that re-using poetry journal pages is just brilliant. Your designs are accomplished looking, too---something I may never achieve but I vow to work on it. So glad you played with us!

  8. These are all wonderful, and I like how the art informs the words and vice versa! The last one has a design that really appeals to me, esp. when paired with the subject of "time." Thank you! xo

  9. Great idea for an unread poetry magazine, Mary Lee. I absolutely love your first poem about art. "Perplexing harmonies" is what I love about modern art.

  10. I think these are remarkable. I love the very last design. I haven't mastered the doodle portion of the zentangle poem. I enjoy the found part, but am never really satisfied with the art. Thanks for playing along!

  11. These are so wonderful and inspiring! What a creative way to use these journals that you tucked away. Your advice for creating them in Paradise, Paved helped me a lot. Thanks.

  12. Looks like you had fun with these. Your first one is very zen like and the image you created reminds me of stacked rocks 🪨. How profound your second poem is.. And I really like poem three on time, it’s reflective voice your art that reminds me of an hour glass, and things turning in on themselves. What a good idea to use old Poetry Magazines for these poems— I have many too, thanks Mary Lee

  13. Ooooh, I love these! You use design and color so well to draw my attention to your found poems. Well done, Mary Lee! I'm hoping to try one soon, and I'm a bit intimidated (and I love Zentangling, so you'd think I'd have a head start--haha).

  14. I ADORE the first one. Quite profound, how you nailed the perplexing harmonies. I'm afraid to try this, for some reason.

  16. Brilliant to use the old Poetry Foundation journals. Your Zentangle visuals are stunning, Mary Lee. I truly love that first poem and the way it captures the unpredictability of our life choices. Art, poetry, and time all made their way into each poem. Ah, what is life but art, poetry, and time? :)
