Poetry Friday -- Live Writing

LAST WEEK ON THE PLAYGROUND

Boom boom boom.
Buzz buzz buzz.
The drums on the playground
are filled with wasps.

buildings keep people apart
the bridge will connect

Good thing I'm writing live with my students or I wouldn't be writing at all! Life has been more than a little busy.

I love to start our writing workshop with some short-form poetry -- 15 Words or Less and Haiku. Each student gets a blank Google Slideshow through Google Classroom. For their poetic inspiration,  I share a set of photos taken around the school (plus a few, like the one above, of the Columbus skyline, that I have taken). This way, we can also talk about choosing media that has been labeled for reuse.

Here's another random haiku, just for fun:

Linda B. has the Poetry Friday Roundup at TeacherDance this week. She's got a SUPER EXCITING cover reveal of a book I. Must. Own.

  1. Love your 'poetry in motion' & your ideas for an exciting poetry push at the year's beginning. Pictures are inspirational always. Love that 'boom boom, buzz, buzz"-a surprise? Wasps seem extra busy this time of year, and take advantage of any found site, like 'found poetry'. Thanks, Mary Lee

  2. Haha, haikubaru!
Glad you are doing live writing. (Did the wasps come out?) Teaching what images are okay to use is so important. Nice to blend those lessons seamlessly.

  7. It is so important for teachers to write with their students. It was one of my favorite things to do. Thank you for your wonderful haiku!

  9. Mary Lee, the poetry around the school project is a great idea. I will share that with teachers.

  11. I love the idea of using photos to prompt poetry. I've been using Linda Rief's Quickwrites and my students are loving it. When we jump start writing without telling kids what they have to write, imagination abounds. Writing with my students is all I am managing these days, too.

  12. Haikubaru! I used to own an Outback - a family favorite. Now I see the poetry packed in the hatchback! Thanks for sharing your classroom poetry ideas. =)

  13. Haikubaru! That made me chuckle, as did the "poetry in motion." I'm glad you're able to write with your students. Every bit counts!! Hope the hectic buzz settles down soon!
