Blow, blow thou winter wind

Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind

Act II, Scene 7 from As You Like It by William Shakespeare (1600)

Blow, blow, thou winter wind.
Thou art not so unkind
As man’s ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.
Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
That dost not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remember’d not.
Heigh-ho! sing, &c.

I have just one word for the weather we've had for the past few weeks: BRRRRRR.

I'll stop complaining and put on my boots, hat, mittens, snow pants and down coat so I can head over to Amy's place in upstate New York. I have a feeling that we don't really know what cold is compared to the cold they have there!  The Poetry Friday roundup is at the Poem Farm this week!

The schedule of roundup hosts for the first six months of 2011 is almost completely filled. Hosts are still needed on

  1. Mary Lee,
How do you always find just the right poem?? Another great one! And from Shakespeare no less. If you need a host for December 31, I could do it. We will be around and don't have big plans. Stay warm!
    Carol

  2. Reading your post, I was immediately taken back to middle school chorus, when we sang this same poem. It's good to have it back in my head. Stay warm!

  3. Boy, did the wind blow here last week. Knocked over full trash cans and beat my beautiful boxwood wreath against my front door! I prefer the snow today to that.

I can host February 25th. (I'll go over to the scheduling post and see if it's still free.)

  4. Can't remember having such cold winds in December -- not even officially winter yet! Looks like we might be in for another doozy this time around . . . Brrrrrr!

  5. Carol's got 12/31 and Sara's got 2/25, so all we need now is 1/21. Thanks everyone!

  6. What a lovely photo! There's only one moment like that each evening (afternoon) and not even every afternoon, and there's only one Bard. I really enjoyed that, and there is something inherently--what? old-fashioned, ancient, period, historical, immodern about the winter wind. It just does not admit digital solutions.

    Thanks, Mary Lee!

Reading this poem prompted me to listen to the musical rendition. What a beautiful song.
