100 Cool Teachers

Here's the original invitation to nominate your favorite teacher(s) in Children's Literature.

The eighty-four we have so far are listed in the sidebar on the right, and much of the conversation about those took place in July.

We can't wait to hear who you'll nominate!

Have you considered Miss Bindergarten in Miss Bindergarten Goes to Kindergarten?

  2. I always thought Juniper from Monica Furlong's books Juniper and Wise Child was an amazing teacher--even if she wasn't in a traditional classroom setting.

Saw this on the Child Lit list serve and thought I'd add a book I just read,
I REMEMBER MISS PERRY, by Pat Brisson, illustrated by Stéphane Jorisch. Cool teacher, touching story (get out the hankies).

I thought of a new suggestion (I think). Mr. Kowsz from Happy Kid by Gail Gauthier. He's a bit of a nerd initially, but it turns out that he's a black belt in taekwondo, and he helps the main character to deal with an important issue.

  5. Eliza Jane Wilder from the Little House books.

Can we count principals? If so, Mr. Jenkins from A Wind in the Door.

I wouldn't consider Eliza Jane Wilder a "cool" teacher--she was pretty mean to both Laura and Carrie!

  8. You're allowed to disagree! Most of the teachers on this list are recommendations from others...they don't all represent Franki's and my views (on the coolness of teachers), but they're all cool to someone somewhere!
