15. The Delta Works
The Delta Works along the coast of the Netherlands are fascinating works of engineering.
I have a couple of Fibs for today.
The Netherlands
Low,
flat,
Holland,
diked and dammed.
From sea, polders rise:
a Mondrian of tulip fields.

Delta Works
Walled,
diked,
blocked up,
occluded,
barricaded shut:
the Netherlands holds back the sea.

I went visual and flowcharty this morning.

It seemed appropriate, given the theme of wonder.

OK, so I probably should not admit that I had never heard of the Delta Works until today. Amazing! Again I am impressed Mary Lee by how much you get done with just a few words. I love the way your two poems feel in my mouth, the first sort of flowy and smooth, the second, sharp and blocky. And I love the word "polder." School work to do this morning. Back tonight, I hope, with something.
ReplyDeleteAnd Kevin, another amazing visual creation! Another new tool to learn! I love this!
ReplyDeleteNever heard of this Dutch engineering feat. Thanks for teaching and writing and keeping the flowing going.
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteOh how I love fibs. How cool is this engineering feat. Thanks for sharing.

"diked and dammed" and "A Mondrian of tulip fields" are phrases that I'm going to try and work into conversation...
